چکیده

Two sources of H113 estimates were available at Platform Harvest; a NOAA buoy and CU depth sensor highrate data. H113 estimates from the NOAA buoy were based on twenty minutes of data every hour, CU pressure measurements were taken every 1.1 seconds. For purposes of this paper, H113 estimates from the (7U depth sensor were based on one hour of data, This paper compares H113 measurements from TOPEX with each of these sources, Differences between H113 estimates from the (7U depth sensors based on twenty minutes and estimates based on one hour of data varied by up to 10% with an rms uncertainty of +5%. l’here is an rms difference between the NOAA buoy and altimeter values of O. 17m with a mean oflset of 0.03m such that the H113 values from the altimeter are higher than from the buoy. There is an rms di~erence between the CU values and altimeter values of O. 19m with a mean offset of O. lm such that the H113 values from the altimeter are higher than from the CU depth sensors. This strongly suggests that the 11113 measurements from the l’OPEX altimeter are well within project specifications

TOPEX microwave radiometer performance evaluation, 1992-1998

The stability and accuracy of the TOPEX Microwave Radiometer (TMR) measurement of the atmospheric path delay due to water vapor is assessed over the interval from launch (August 1992) through June 1998. Detailed global comparisons are made with path delays derived from the special sensor microwave imager (SSM/I) instruments and a network of 15 island radiosondes. The results provide consistent ...

Validation of Wavewatch-III Using the TOPEX/POSEIDON Data

A full-spectral third-generation ocean wind-wave model, Wavewatch-III, has been implemented in the South China Sea (SCS) for investigating the wind wave characteristics. This model was developed at the Ocean Modeling Branch of the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP). The NASA QuickScat data (0.25 resolution) two times daily were used to simulate the wind waves for the whole yea...

Multisensor Validation of Ers-1 Sar Wave Mode and Altimeter-derived Significant Wave Heights Using Topex, Geosat and Seasat Data

A comparison of signiicant wave heights H s was performed using satellite altimeter data available between 1978 to 1994 from SEASAT, GEOSAT, ERS-1 and TOPEX. The purpose was to estimate the degree of accuracy between the diierent instruments. Statistical properties of H s as obtained from the altimeters are found to be compatible with those from in situ measurements in the North Atlantic. All H...

The effects of rain on TOPEX/Poseidon altimeter data

The presence of rain in the sub-satellite track can significantly degrade altimeter measurements by causing an attenuation of the backscattered signal, a change in its path length through the atmosphere and a change in the mean square slope of the sea surface. This can cause errors, not only in the measurement of the satellite altitude, but also in the determination of wind speed and wave heigh...
